Built into the space you actually have

Most home offices are not rooms designed to be offices, they are alcoves, spare bedrooms, landings and spaces under a window or a stair. That is precisely where a catalogue desk fails: the opening is out of square, the sill height dictates the worktop, or the run has to stop short of an outlet. We build to the opening, including the awkward parts, and issue drawings for approval before anything is cut.

Desk heights, depths and clearances

A working desk sits at 73–75 cm, paired with a task chair adjustable roughly between 42 and 52 cm. Give the top at least 60 cm of depth so a monitor sits at arm’s length, and leave 90–110 cm of clear floor behind the chair so you can push back and stand. Storage, shelving and cable management

Storage is what turns a desk into an office: full-height shelving sized to the wall, closed cabinetry beneath for the things that should not be on display, and a credenza scaled to the room rather than to a catalogue. Shelf thickness and span are specified to the load, books are heavier than objects and sag cheap shelving within a year. Cabling is detailed at design stage: grommets where you want them, a rear channel or tray under the top, a routed chase down a leg, and a ventilated cabinet for a router or power strip.

What desk height and clearance should I plan for?

Can you build a desk into an alcove or under a window?

Yes, that is the usual reason people commission rather than buy. We build to the exact opening, including out-of-square walls, a sloped ceiling, a sill height that dictates the worktop level, or a run that has to stop short of a radiator or outlet. Send measurements and photographs and we will draw it before anything is cut.

Do you build wall-to-wall shelving and integrated storage?

Yes: full-height shelving, cabinetry with closed storage below and open shelving above, credenzas sized to a wall, and integrated desk-and-shelving runs. Adjustable shelves are specified to the load you actually intend, books need a different shelf thickness and span than objects.

How do you handle cable management?

Tell us the setup, monitors, dock, lamp, charging, and we detail for it: grommets where you want them, a rear cable channel or tray under the top, a routed chase down a leg, and a cabinet with a ventilated back for a router or power strip. It is far easier to build in than to add later.

Will a wooden desk survive Panama’s humidity?

Only if it is the right construction. Solid hardwood with proper joinery and a sealed finish is stable; MDF and veneered particleboard swell and delaminate, which is why we do not build with them. Can you match office furniture to the rest of my home?

Yes. Most home offices sit inside a wider scheme, so we match wood species, stain and hardware to your existing pieces, or design the office alongside the rest of the house so it reads as one home rather than a room bolted on.

How long does a custom desk or office fit-out take?

About 10–16 weeks depending on materials and complexity, plus delivery and installation. You approve drawings, dimensions and finishes before production starts, and you receive an exact lead-time window with your quote.
