A long row of carved alabaster heads runs along a solid brass frame in this linear chandelier, sized to sit over a dining table or kitchen island. Each head is cut from Spanish alabaster, a soft and translucent stone that diffuses the lamp inside it, and the natural veining varies from one head to the next, so every fixture carries its own pattern.
The heavy-gauge brass gives the piece real heft and a deep, warm tone between the pale stones. Lit with warm white at 2700K, the alabaster glows in shades of honey and cream, with the veins showing as soft amber and gray. Cooler bulbs leave the stone looking flat and grayish, so warm lamping matters here. The result is a gentle, even glow along the table rather than a sharp downlight. Over an island, plan on separate task lighting as well.
Details
- Materials: Spanish alabaster heads, heavy-gauge solid brass frame
- 12 heads: 100 cm (39.4") long, suits a table of roughly 160 to 200 cm (63 to 79")
- 16 heads: 120 cm (47.2") long, suits a table or island of roughly 180 to 220 cm (71 to 87")
- Width and height: 35 cm (13.8") wide, 22 cm (8.7") high, both sizes
- Suspension: 50 cm (19.7") chain; overall drop about 72 cm (28") from the ceiling, which works over a table with ceilings of about 2.2 to 2.4 m (7.5 to 8 ft)
- Hanging height: place the bottom 75 to 90 cm (30 to 35") above the table or counter
- Light source: one E14 LED lamp per head (12 or 16 total); 2700K warm white recommended
- Weight: about 18 to 24 kg (40 to 53 lb)
- Installation: hardwired, indoor use; because of its weight, an electrician should anchor it to a ceiling joist or reinforced blocking instead of a standard junction box
Care
Turn the fixture off and give the lamps time to cool before cleaning. The alabaster is soft and porous, so dust it only with a dry, soft cloth or a feather duster and keep water, sprays and cleaning products away from it. For the brass, a soft dry cloth is enough; avoid metal polish.
