Olefin vs Sunbrella: Which Outdoor Fabric?
Olefin vs Sunbrella, honestly compared: fade resistance, mildew, feel, heat and price, plus Outdura. Which outdoor fabric to choose for sun, shade and humidity.
We work with both fabrics on our outdoor pieces for tropical terraces, so this is a working comparison, not a brochure. Where one fabric is simply better, we say so.
Olefin vs Sunbrella at a glance
| Olefin | Sunbrella (acrylic) | |
|---|---|---|
| Fibre | Polypropylene, a plastic polymer, coloured before it is spun | Acrylic, coloured before it is spun |
| Colour in full sun | Good, but fades sooner than acrylic | The benchmark for fade resistance |
| Water and mildew | Excellent: absorbs almost no water and dries fast | Very good: water-repellent finish, breathes, dries well |
| Feel | Smooth, slightly crisp; modern weaves are much softer than older ones | Soft, close to a cotton canvas |
| Heat | Sensitive: low melting point, keep away from grills, fire pits and hot irons | Tolerates heat better |
| Cleaning | Mild soap and water; most can take diluted bleach | Mild soap and water; diluted bleach for stubborn stains |
| Price | Lower | Higher |
| Best for | Covered terraces, rope and woven frames, pool areas that stay wet | Seat and back cushions in direct sun, colours you want to keep bright |
What is the difference between olefin and Sunbrella?
Both are solution-dyed: the pigment goes into the liquid polymer before the fibre is made, so the colour runs all the way through instead of sitting on the surface. That is why both resist bleach and stains far better than a printed fabric. The difference is the polymer. Sunbrella is a brand of acrylic, and acrylic is simply more stable under ultraviolet light. Olefin is polypropylene, the lightest textile fibre there is, and it barely absorbs water, which makes it hard for mildew to take hold.
In practice, the fabric that wins depends on where the cushion lives. On an open pool deck in Panama City or South Florida, the sun is the enemy, and acrylic keeps its colour noticeably longer. On a covered terrace, in a humid garden or on a frame that gets rained on every afternoon, moisture is the enemy, and olefin's fast drying is worth more than the extra fade resistance.
Is olefin as good as Sunbrella?
For water, mildew and price, yes, and sometimes better. For colour life in hard sun and for softness, no. A good olefin in a shaded spot will outlast a cheap printed fabric by years, but it will not match acrylic on a south-facing deck. If budget matters and the piece is under a roof, olefin is the sensible choice.
What about Outdura?
Outdura is also a solution-dyed acrylic, made in North Carolina. It performs much like Sunbrella: strong colour retention, a soft hand and easy cleaning. When clients compare the two, the decision usually comes down to the colour, texture and pattern they like, not to a difference in durability.
Which do we recommend for the tropics?
For most of our outdoor sets we suggest acrylic on seat and back cushions that face the sun, and olefin where it is shaded or where the weave is part of the frame, such as rope seating. Whatever the fabric, use quick-dry foam and a breathable cushion base, and bring cushions in or cover them during long rainy stretches. The fabric is only half the story; the filling decides whether a cushion stays fresh in humid weather.
Common questions
Is olefin plastic?
Yes. Olefin is polypropylene, the same family of polymer used in many plastic products, spun into a fibre. That is why it repels water so well.
Is olefin soft?
It is smooth rather than plush. Older olefins felt stiff and slightly waxy; current weaves are much softer, though most people still find acrylic closer to a cotton canvas.
Does olefin fade?
Solution-dyed olefin holds colour well, but in strong direct sun it fades sooner than acrylic. In shade it keeps its colour for years.
Can you use bleach on Sunbrella and olefin?
Most solution-dyed acrylics and olefins tolerate a diluted bleach solution for stubborn stains or mildew. Always check the maker's care label and rinse thoroughly.
