Three concentric brass rings carry overlapping ovals of swirled glass, with every oval hanging from its own brass pin. The effect is layered and scale-like, closer to plumage than to a solid shade. Each piece of clear glass holds white streaks drawn through its interior, so the pattern lives within the glass itself. Some ovals are nearly transparent with a single pale thread, while others are thick with cloudy white, and that variety across the three tiers gives the fixture its character.
The lamps are hidden inside the drum behind the innermost ring, so you never see a bulb from ordinary angles. Light travels through two or three layers of glass on its way out, which produces a warm, dappled glow: brighter through the clearer ovals, softer through the dense ones, with the bottom tier casting the most light downward. Think of it as atmosphere and presence over a table rather than even task lighting.
Details
- Diameter: 38.5" (97.8 cm)
- Height: 24.25" (61.6 cm)
- Frame: solid brass rings, pins and chain in a satin finish
- Glass: clear swirled glass with white streaking, three tiers of overlapping ovals; individual ovals can be removed and replaced without taking a tier apart
- Light source: 11 x E12 candelabra sockets, bulbs not included
- Recommended bulbs: matching lamps at 2700K in all sockets, since mixed color temperatures show through the glass
- Dimming: standard version is not dimmable
- Suspension: chain from a ceiling plate; shorten the drop by taking out links
- Dining placement: suits a table about 58" to 77" (147 to 195 cm) wide, with the bottom glass 30" to 36" (76 to 91 cm) over the surface
- Room placement: scaled for a room of roughly 18 x 20 ft (5.5 x 6 m); without a table below, plan on a ceiling of at least 9 ft for head clearance
Installation
This is a heavy fixture. It should be secured to a ceiling box rated for its weight and backed by a joist or blocking, so have your electrician check the ceiling structure ahead of time. Hang and level the brass frame before adding any glass. The ovals arrive packed on their own and go on ring by ring, starting at the bottom; plan on two people and some patience. Hold the glass by its edges, because fingerprints and smudges become visible once the lamps are on.
Care
Use a soft brush to remove dust from the glass, since a cloth tends to snag on the edges and pins. Do not spray any cleaner on the fixture, as moisture collects in the fittings and leaves spots. For the brass, wipe with a cloth that is only slightly damp and dry it right away. Skip metal polish, which strips the satin surface and creates shiny patches.
