This hand-painted portrait builds a woman's figure from overlapping geometric planes instead of literal features. Deep black shapes form her hair and the shadows around her, while terracotta, ochre and camel brown lend the figure warmth. Planes of cream and ivory cut through with crisp contrast, and small burgundy accents add depth.
Behind her, a weathered ground of muted teal, earthy brown and distressed white gives the angular composition a looser, more spontaneous counterpoint. From a distance the silhouette reads boldly. Up close, the layered color fields and hand-worked marks come forward. The earthy palette sits comfortably with walnut, oak, leather, linen and travertine, and brings color to a neutral room without overpowering it.
