Acrylic & Olefin Upholstery

Both acrylic and olefin are synthetic fibers with good performance qualities for outdoor applications, but olefin is generally softer, more stain-resistant, and more durable to fraying and tearing, while acrylic is known for its colorfastness and liquid repellency.

Acrylic:

  • Colorfastness, liquid repellency, and relatively easy cleaning.

  • Resistance to water-based stains.

  • Not damaged by mildew or insects.

  • Can be stiff or rough to the touch.

  • Not as stain-resistant as olefin.

  • Less durable than olefin in terms of resistance to fraying and tearing.

Olefin:

  • Softness, stain resistance, and durability.

  • Naturally resistant to chemicals, water-based stains, and mildew.

  • More resistant to fraying and tearing than acrylic.

  • Generally harder to stain than acrylic.

  • Good UV resistance.

  • Not as colorfast or liquid repellent as acrylic.

  • Can be prone to pilling and snagging.

Maintenance Tips:

Acrylic:

  • Regularly wipe down with soap and water.

  • For stubborn stains, use a mild detergent and a soft brush.
  • Air dry after washing.

Olefin:

  • Brush off loose dirt and debris with a soft brush or vacuum.
  • For minor stains, blot with a clean cloth or sponge and a mixture of mild soap and lukewarm water.

  • Rinse thoroughly and let air dry.

  • Avoid using harsh chemicals or bleach.

In Summary:

  • Choose acrylic if: You prioritize water and stain resistance, UV protection, and durability, and are willing to pay a bit more.
