Custom Furniture: Local Workroom vs Marketplace vs Direct Studio

An honest comparison of the four ways to commission custom furniture - local workroom, online marketplace, retail made-to-order and direct studio - with real price medians and how to compare quotes fairly.

An honest comparison of the four ways to commission custom furniture, written by a studio that occupies one of them. Where we have a stake, we say so.

"Custom furniture" describes at least four different businesses, and they are not interchangeable. Before comparing quotes it helps to know which kind of maker produced each one, because the same table can be priced very differently depending on how many parties stand between the workshop and your living room.

The four routes, compared

Route Best for Typical trade-off
Local workroom or cabinetmaker Site-specific work, unusual installations, seeing materials in person, supporting a local trade Capacity is limited, so lead times stretch when they are busy; material range is narrower; stone and upholstery are often subcontracted
Online custom marketplace Comparing several makers quickly; finding a specialist for one unusual piece The platform takes a commission that sits in your price; quality varies by individual maker rather than by brand; you coordinate the relationship
Retail brand with made-to-order options Buyers who like an existing design and want a different fabric or finish "Custom" usually means choosing from a menu - dimensions are generally fixed; retail overhead is in the price
Direct studio (design and manufacture in-house) Pieces where exact dimensions and specific materials matter; multi-room or whole-home projects Usually remote, so you assess the maker on documentation rather than a visit; minimums may apply
Where we sit, for transparency: Marcelina is the fourth kind. We design in-house and build in our own factories, then ship direct. That shapes our view, so treat the comparison above as informed rather than neutral - and check it against quotes you gather yourself.

How to compare quotes fairly

Quotes for "the same" table are often not comparable. Before deciding, normalise them on these six points:

  1. Frame and substrate. Kiln-dried hardwood, or engineered board with veneer? This is the single largest hidden difference in furniture that looks identical in photographs.
  2. Are dimensions actually adjustable? If the answer is "we offer three sizes", that is configuration, not custom work.
  3. Is the stone or fabric specified by name? "Marble" is not a specification. "Carrara, honed, 3 cm, mitred edge" is.
  4. Deposit and payment terms. Fifty percent up front is standard in made-to-order work. What the deposit covers if you cancel is the part worth reading.
  5. Delivery and duties. Kerbside or placed in the room? For imports, DDP or not? An attractive quote can become an unattractive one at the port.
  6. Warranty terms. Length matters less than what is excluded. Ask specifically about structural frame coverage.

What a realistic budget looks like

Because published pricing is scarce, here are real medians from our own catalogue of 1,494 made-to-order pieces - not an industry average, but a concrete reference point:

Piece Median Typical range (middle 50%)

Dining table $5,200 $3,640 – $7,540
Bed or headboard $4,680 $3,900 – $5,200
Coffee table $2,860 $2,210 – $3,770

When custom is the wrong answer

Custom is not always the right call, and a maker who tells you otherwise is selling. Buy retail when the piece is small and simple, when you need it within a month, when you are furnishing a short-term rental, or when a standard size genuinely fits your space. Commission custom when dimensions are constrained, when you want a specific material, when you plan to keep the piece for a decade or more, or when nothing on the market fits the room.

Frequently asked questions

What are the ways to buy custom furniture?

There are four common routes: a local independent workroom or cabinetmaker; an online custom marketplace that matches you with makers; a retail brand offering made-to-order options on its own designs; and a direct studio that designs and manufactures its own pieces. They differ mainly in how much control you have over dimensions and materials, and in how the price is built up.

Is a local workroom better than an online custom furniture service?

A local workroom is best when you need to inspect materials in person, want to meet the maker, or have an unusual installation. An online or direct studio is generally better on price and on breadth of materials, because production is not tied to one small shop. The trade-off is that you evaluate the maker through photographs, references and documentation rather than a visit.

How long should custom furniture take?

Ten to sixteen weeks is a normal window for a made-to-order piece, plus shipping. Under six weeks usually means the piece is being pulled from existing stock rather than built for you. Over six months typically indicates a small workroom with a queue, or a piece involving rare materials.

What should I ask before commissioning custom furniture?

Ask what the frame is made of and whether hardwood is kiln-dried; whether dimensions can change after the quote; what the deposit is and what it covers; what the warranty covers and for how long; who is liable if the piece is damaged in transit; and, for imports, whether duties are included in the price.

Are import duties included when ordering custom furniture from abroad?

Only if the quote says DDP - delivered duties paid. If a quote is DAP or EXW, duties, customs brokerage and final delivery are billed to you separately on arrival, which can add a substantial and unpredictable amount.
